A man and his horse are recovering from gunshot wounds and Midwest City police are looking for the shooter.

It happened near NE 7th and Royal Avenue.

"The guy had been riding the horse and somebody come down 7th and just shot him," said Kaye Wheeler, a neighbor. "Shot him and the horse both."

Wheeler said she fell off her coach, startled after hearing several gunshots from across the street. When she looked outside, she noticed a man yelling for help.

"Screaming, 'God help me; God help me; somebody help me; I've been shot,'" Wheeler said.

When officers arrived, they found the victim who said he was being chased by a dark gray Dodge Challenger. He told police as he was fleeing when the driver of the car shot at him.

"That's what surprised me," said Deandre Prince. "I mean, you pull up and shoot somebody on a horse."

Police said the man was hit in his leg and the horse was hit in the upper abdomen and front leg.

"I stepped back to look better and when I did the horse come running across here and run off over there," Wheeler said.

Police said the victim doesn't know the suspect and isn't sure if there were others in the car.

"It was surprising to me because this neighborhood is so quiet," Prince said. "It's a lot of elder people, not too much commotion."

The victim contacted his brother who came and took the horse to an animal hospital. Both he and the horse are expected to recover.

Police have not identified the victim as of Wednesday evening.
