A Moore police sergeant is credited for saving the life of a one-year-old boy after a near-drowning Wednesday.
Frantic calls came into 911 around 6 p.m. that a toddler was motionless in the pond at Fairmoore Park in Moore.
Moore Police Sergeant Jason Landrum knew as soon as he opened his cruiser door, it was going to be bad.
“I wanted him to be breathing,” said Landrum. “That was the first thing I wanted was him to be breathing.”
Within minutes Landrum put his training to work, performing CPR.
“(I) started doing chest compressions,” said Landrum. “My partner tilted his head back to open his airway up and continued to do chest compressions, kind of pushing on his stomach to force some of the water out of his belly.”
Seconds felt like hours before finally, the 1-year-old’s heart started beating again.
“Finally, he started taking some labored breaths, so I continued chest compressions until the paramedics got there,” said Landrum. “The fire department they took over and probably within 2-3 minutes, I heard some crying from him.”
Moore police said Landrum is consistently nominated for either officer or detective of the year.
A father of three boys himself, this isn’t something he’ll easily forget.
“Later I thought about it, if I could have done something different or been quicker or done something that would have been better,” said Landrum. “Shortly after I shot my kiddos a text, let them know I loved them and went on to the next call.”
Moore police continue to investigate what happened at the park.
It’s possible the case could be turned over to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
