Something Good: Edmond Gym Offers Workout Class For People In Recovery

One local gym is offering a free workout class aimed at helping the recovery community.

Koda Deer Creek has been the host of Fit Sober Saturday for about a year and a half now. The fun free workout class aims to provide a support system to those recovering from addiction. 

"We always say stronger together," said one of the leaders and coaches of the class, Mindy Carrell. It's all about getting through a tough workout together."

So, that's what the group does the third Saturday of every month. The class is open to all fitness levels and can be scaled to any athlete's preference. 

Carrell has been sober for over nine years. The coach said she and the other leaders, Corey Eubanks and Brian Stalcup, wanted to give people some of the peace Koda and working out has brought to their lives. 

"We know what Koda and fitness does for us and our mental health and recovery," said Carrell. "And we just want to let other people feel that."

Eubanks and Stalcup have also been members of the recovery community for over 10 years. These three hope their class will possibly help people take the first step out of addiction or just help build a community to lean on. 

"Just taking that first step is very scary if you were at a point where I was. I was out of options," said one Fit Sober Saturday athlete Jason Selvidge.

Selvidge has been a participant in the monthly class since it started. 

"Once I came in and started doing the deal, once I walked through that first step of fear, it became so much easier because of the love and support system around here," said Selvidge. 

The class welcomes everyone even those just wanting to support.

"It would be nice to have it every weekend at a different spot," said Eubanks.

That's the long term goal, and they're getting there. Just this month they expanded to Koda Norman the first Saturday of every month.
