DEL CITY, Okla. -

A federal sex offender was arrested in Kay County after he told police that he had sex with a minor.

Phillip Erwin, 30, is charged with first-degree rape and harboring a runaway child.

In the early morning hours of July 14, police said, Erwin picked up a 15-year-old Del City child from her home.

“About 2:00 in the morning, our reporting party’s niece heard a noise in the backyard and it is believed that’s when she left the house,” said Maj. Bradley Rule from the Del City Police Department.

Erwin drove the underage girl to Smith’s RV Park near Blackwell in Kay County, where he was staying, and told police he knew the minor ran away from home but thought she was actually 18.

“The parents used the ‘Find My iPhone’ app to locate her phone and it was in a trailer park in Kay County,” said Rule. “Our supervisor called the Kay County Sheriff’s Department and advised them that we had a runaway and that was the last place she was known to be.”

According to court documents, the two met on Fling.com, exchanged messages and eventually made plans to meet in person.

Kay County deputies found the two at the RV park after they received the call from Del City police.

Erwin is a federally registered sex offender in Texas for possession of child pornography.

Police want to remind parents to watch your children’s internet activity like a hawk.

“Just doing the research and learning what to look for, monitor their online activity,” said Rule. “If you do have a child that is a runaway, notify us immediately. The sooner we can get the information out there, the better chance we have at getting them home earlier."

The minor was taken into police custody until her parents picked her up.
