One person was killed in a tragic overnight house fire in Guthrie as two mobile homes burned to the ground.

The homes were located near Academy Road and West University Avenue, just west of the outskirts of town.

Firefighters first got the call of the home on fire around 1:30 a.m. A passerby saw the flames and called 911.

“It was pretty intense, the fire was high and it was spreading east from the folks home up there,” explained Sonny Bradford who lives nearby.

Firefighters said one home was already burned down, the other's roof collapsed by the time they got there and their efforts were made more difficult by a the lack of nearby fire hydrants.

“We had to depend on water shuttled from tankers from the volunteers around us to bring in water supply,” said Batt. Chief Greg Machtolff with the Guthrie Fire Department.

Meanwhile, Sonny said neighbors were concerned about the fire spreading with the dry conditions.

“We went to the shop and got our tractor out in case we needed to start plowing the ground to control the fire,” he said.

At the scene, firefighters said they were told there could be a woman still in one of the homes.

“With the amount of fire we had at the time of arrival there was no way anybody could survive,” said Machtolff.

Once firefighters were finally able to get water on the fire, they quickly got it under control and confirmed one person had died.

“They were good neighbors, “said Bradford tearfully. “It’s going to be a great loss for the neighborhood.”

According to the fire chief, after the fire was extinguished the body was found in the debris. It has been turned over to the medical examiner for a positive identification.

The victim has not been identified at this time.

Guthrie crews were assisted by the Crescent, Oak Cliff, Sooner and Woodcrest Fire Departments in extinguishing this blaze and the fire was placed under control at approximately 2:30 a.m., according to the report.

The fire remains under investigation by the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office.
