EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Local lakes are ready for the busy Memorial weekend and officials will be keeping a close eye to make sure your holiday's safe.
Thousands of folks are expected to come out to Lake Arcadia this weekend and you'll need to know who has to wear a lifejacket among other new laws.
"It can get a little crazy at times, it just depends on the mood of the crowd. Sometimes we have problems out here," said Edmond Police Officer Bobby Hunter.
That's why they're out here on the ground and in the water to make sure everyone's on board with the rules, including checking registration.
While on the lake, Hunter said a rash of drownings led to a no tolerance law.
"The ordinance says swimming, standing or any kind in the water in Arcadia Lake, children have to have a life jacket on," Officer Hunter said. "We just had a lot of drowning out here."
In the past, people are only allowed to swim in designated areas, but this year the law has changed.
"You can swim anywhere here on the lake. I believe it's 50 ft off shore," said Edmond Police Sgt. Bob Pratt.
Checkpoints will be set up around Lake Arcadia to make sure you have your driver's license, insurance, and you're buckled up.
Police said you're also not allowed to have glass bottles, alcohol or pets. Edmond Police will be working with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's office at the checkpoint this weekend.
