The MAPS 3 streetcar project is moving forward and now we are getting a better idea of how this major project will work.
City Council members heard the latest presentation from consultants Tuesday.
Project consultants tell News 9 diagonal spots on the east side of Broadway will have to be replaced with parallel spots.
“We feel there is a significant safety concern,” said Design Consultant Mark Dorn.
The design calls for drivers and the five streetcars to use the same lanes as they travel from Bricktown up to St Anthony's hospital. There will be 22 total stops.
“It should have pretty negligible effects on traffic,” said Dorn.
Another aspect is the electrical charge the streetcars get with a wire up-top. In areas where the high wire isn't possible, the cars will be powered by battery.
The $128 million project is expected to be done in Spring 2018. The project is only 30-percent planned at the moment, but consultants say the route is pretty much set in stone despite the fact that there is no location for MAPS 3 convention center right now.
