MIAMI (AP) -- Forecasters say Bertha has strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane in the open Atlantic, but poses no threat to land.
Bertha battered Bermuda earlier this week, knocking out electricity to thousands on the Atlantic tourist island.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It is the longest-lived July tropical storm in history. Bertha became the Atlantic season's first hurricane.
As of about 5 p.m., Bertha's maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph. Bertha is moving northeast at 22 mph and is located about 640 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
