OKLAHOMA CITY -- U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn has signed a pledge to support a constitutional amendment limiting the terms of members of Congress.
U.S. Term Limits said Monday that Coburn is the first member of Congress to sign the pledge.
Coburn spokesman John Hart confirmed Coburn's support of the proposal. He said Coburn believes term limits is the only way to achieve the government envisioned by the nation's Founding Fathers.
The proposed amendment would limit House members to three consecutive two-year terms and Senators to two consecutive six-year terms.
Coburn is currently running for re-election to a second term in the Senate. Hart said Coburn has promised that -- if re-elected -- this will be his final term in office.
