Mayoral Candidate Ed Shadid's substance abuse issues may go beyond marijuana. Published reports say Shadid's divorce records reveal a past that includes cocaine, LSD and domestic violence.

During a conversation with News 9 early this month, Ed Shadid was open about his past addiction to marijuana.

"There's a movement growing across the United States that says those of us in long term recovery need to come forward," said Shadid on December 3.

But he wouldn't give details about his addiction.

Now according to the Oklahoma Gazette, the sealed divorce records show Shadid also used "cocaine in 2000 and again in 2004" and Shadid admitted he threw a chair against a wall, kicked a hole in a wall and broke a lamp during a heated argument with his wife.

The political blog the Red Dirt Report also says in a deposition Shadid admitted "he had become incapacitated by hallucinogenic drugs including LSD and Ecstasy when he was a teenager."

"It's a problem that isn't going to go away if we keep ignoring it," said Jeffrey Dismukes with the State Department of Substance Abuse. He can't talk specifically about this case but says 12 percent of Oklahomans have some sort of substance abuse addiction.

"It's an illness, it's like any disease and we need to treat it that way. But it's difficult because there's a stigma that does surround these illnesses," said Dismukes.

After two stints at Rehabilitation Centers, Shadid says he's been sober ever since. And in a previous interview told News 9 the records were sealed in order to protect his children.

"They are trying to unseal the records of a family that would insure harm to children," said Shadid.

Shadid told News9 he was working on a statement to respond to the current allegations but at this time we haven't received that statement.

A judge is expected to make a decision on unsealing those records later this week.
