A Beckham County deputy shoots and kills a suspect after investigators say he attacked the deputy with an ax.
Around 11 a.m. Thursday, two Sayre police officers attempted to serve felony warrants on Larry Dale Plaster, 43, at the Southgate Apartments in Sayre. Police say Plaster resisted arrest then ran from the area. The officers chased the suspect and called for backup.
A Beckham County Sheriff deputy in the area joined the chase. That deputy attempted to arrest Plaster when Plaster hit the deputy several times with an ax. The deputy fired several rounds. Plaster was struck by at least one bullet and died at the scene. The deputy was treated and released from an area hospital.
Police say officers and the deputy used tasers in an attempt to apprehend Plaster, but the tasers were not effective.
The Beckham County Sheriff's Office requested OSBI investigate the shooting. OSBI investigative and crime scene agents are at both scenes collecting information and evidence.
Plaster's body will be sent for an autopsy. OSBI will not release the deputy's name at this time since he is part of the investigation.
Plaster had felony warrants for failure to pay child support and failure to pay a warrant for attempting to elude police while under the influence.
