The Oklahoma City Zoo has revealed the name for a baby elephant on Monday. "Achara" was chosen by approximately 13,000 online votes and received more than 50 percent of the total votes.
Achara (A-ka-ra), of Thai origin, means “pretty angel” and is the zoo keepers' favorite.
An "unveiling" was held at 2 p.m. on the Elephant Boardwalk. Zoo officials unveiled the name by spelling it out using vegetation and treats in the elephant sand stall.
The zoo offered free admission at 2 p.m. Café 501 and KIND Healthy Snacks provided refreshments during the celebrations. Visitors also got to enjoy music provided by OU Sooner Bassooners in the warm ZooZeum.
Special guests who attended the celebrations include Mayor Mick Cornett and his wife Terri.

The baby elephant was born at 1:35 p.m. on Monday, December 22, weighing 332 pounds. Zoo officials hosted a naming contest, and Oklahomans were asked to choose from four names selected by the zoo's elephant care team, Achara, Biju, Divya, and Sage.
