A group of Luther High School students took a pile of donated metal and materials, and with a lot of elbow grease and polish, they turned it into quite a gem.
The seven students are members of Mark Dunn’s Shop Class. Back in January, they started writing down details and planning what is now a beautiful smoker and oven. It is made in the shape of black and red train engine.
Luther Sophomore Caleb McCaslin is one of the students who worked tirelessly on the project.
“You can probably put five or six briskets on there, or we’re thinking about putting a whole hog on there,” he grinned Wednesday afternoon.
The smoker is equipped with two large compartments, and there is also a large oven in the back of the rig.
Kodee Christy also participated in the project.
“I guess we all like to prove people wrong,” he said.
Teacher Mark Dunn says the school district will eventually sell the smoke through an auction, raffle, or straight up sale.
“I’m so proud of these kids,” said Dunn.
