Travis Ford’s team lacks talent, experience and its two best players, but it doesn’t lack grit. The Cowboys will need all the grit they can muster when they face second-ranked Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse on Big Monday at 8:00 p.m. CT.
The Jayhawks will have revenge on their minds.
Kansas represents the only non-purple-wearing team in the conference to fall to Oklahoma State. That was nearly a month ago and point guard Jawun Evans finished with 22 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. OSU led by five at half and then blew the game open in the second half before winning 86-67.
The Cowboys have played three-straight without Evans now - as the freshman rehabs his injured shoulder - winning for the first time since the injury on Saturday. Naturally it wasn’t pretty, but Jeff Newberry (10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists) and Leyton Hammonds (13 points, 6 rebounds) willed the Cowboys to victory against Kansas State in overtime.
The Jayhawks are riding a five-game winning streak and are coming off their best win of the season after knocking off No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman 76-72. Bill Self has won 11-consecutive Big 12 titles and Saturday’s result put Kansas back on top the conference standings.
