A local organization that helps find organ donors is working to bring awareness to post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.
LifeShare is hosting its annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day October 19. The initiative promotes education and awareness about life beyond breast cancer.
To aide in breast reconstruction, plastic surgeons use donated tissue to act as a scaffolding in providing additional protective layers under the muscle for the implant in the patient. This sling is a biologic mesh made possible by the gift of donated tissue. Just one tissue donor can help up to ten post-mastectomy reconstruction patients.
To celebrate BRA Day, LifeShare will host a blood drive and opportunity to donate a bra to the YWCA. The first 100 people who show they are a registered organ donor, donate blood or donate a bra will receive a free Big Truck Taco.
The festivities will be held at LifeShare Transplant Donor Services on Wednesday, October 19 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. LifeShare is located on 4705 Northwest Expressway, Oklahoma City 73132. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
LifeShare is a nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO) dedicated to the recovery of organs and tissue for transplant purposes. We work closely with five transplant centers and 145 healthcare organizations in the state of Oklahoma to facilitate donation. Additionally, we strive to raise awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation through public education.
