Kirk Humphreys has resigned from the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents.

Following his announcement Thursday, Humphreys said he decided to step down after fellow board members expressed concern.

“Obviously they felt that my presence would be a distraction and make their path more difficult,” Humphreys said.

The announcement came Thursday, after public comment and a board executive session, over comments Humphreys made about homosexuality.

During an appearance on a political show, Humphreys said, “If it’s ok then it’s ok for everybody, and quite frankly, it’s ok for men to sleep with little boys if it’s ok.”

That statement sparked outrage among many community members, including Tony Stevenson of Freedom Oklahoma. Humphreys has since apologized to Stevenson.

“Regent Humphreys just set an example that when you do things like that and when you take the consequences of your actions and you move forward,” Stevenson said Thursday.

Stevenson says he’s satisfied with Humphreys’ decision and appreciates the action taken.

The resigning regent says he’ll step down before the second semester after the Rose Bowl.

“Be gracious in what you say. Find the value in people no matter who they are or what they are,” Humphreys said, when asked what advice he’d leave the student body.

Humphreys remains on the boards of OG&E and John Rex Elementary. He says if either board has a concern about him staying on, he will listen.
