The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma has created a program to provide meals for a group of people that tend to be forgotten: Oklahoma seniors. One in 10 from this group are food insecure. Many live on fixed incomes and are forced to decide whether to pay rent or their medical bills and prescriptions each month. Too often it is difficult for them to make their limited income far enough to also buy healthy, nutritious foods.

The Senior Mobile Market Program is meeting older Oklahomans where they live. Each month, groceries are delivered to seniors living in 18 Oklahoma Housing Authority sites in Oklahoma, Pottawatomie, Seminole and Comanche counties. The mobile market visits the centers at the end of the month when residents need the most food assistance. Each person receives a bag of nonperishable food items with produce, refrigerated items and bread.

Senior Mobile Markets serves more than 900 seniors each month. Last year, it is estimated the markets provided 260,095 meals. Grants from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation’s Fund for Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County Community Support have made it possible for the Regional Food Bank to create a new program, Senior Servings, that provides nutritious meals directly to seniors who are living independently and are considered food insecure. Through Senior Servings, individuals who enjoy meals at congregate meal sites during the week are provided with four meals to take home for the weekend. These meals are prepared and flash frozen at the Regional Food Bank’s production kitchen, Hope’s Kitchen.
