EL RENO, Oklahoma -

Two young siblings in El Reno are being hailed heroes by their family. Jerry White was watching his grandchildren Thursday night while their parents went to a company Christmas party. However, when he stepped outside and fell, his grandkids took over.

“I was really scared,” remembers 10-year-old Gary White.

Gary and his 9-year-old sister Winter walked News 9 through what happened that night.

“I heard him yell so I came in there and so did Gary,” said Winter. “He fell right here but when we we're trying to pull him inside, he was like sliding along there.”

Their grandpa Jerry White or “Papa” as they call him went to close the front door when he slipped on the icy porch and fell, breaking his right shoulder.

“I knew I broke it, when I was lying down there I knew it was broken,” Papa said. “It was iced over and I just didn't realize it until it was too late.”

However, Gary and Winter never left his side.

“The grandchildren grabbed me by my feet and pulled me inside the house,” he said. “And then got a pillow to put under my head.”

Then, they ran across the street to the neighbor’s house and called their parents.

“When we got here, the fire department and ambulance was here,” said Dale White, Gary and Winter’s dad.

“They probably saved my life because I could have frozen out there or it would have been a lot worse,” said Papa.

“We're real proud of what they did,” said Dale. “They stepped up when the time came and they handled the emergency just like they needed to do.”

Papa is expected to make a full recovery and he credits his grandchildren for that.
