Winter Weather Wreaking Havoc For Holiday Travelers

Posted: Updated:

The day after Christmas is one of the busiest travel and retail days of the year. With that, thousands hit the highways and when they did they got a blast of winter weather.

In the eastern part of the state chances for heavy rain...  out west sleet snow even possible blizzard conditions are bearing down. And around the metro and to the south severe storms and high winds prompting flash flood warnings...even a tornado watch as far south as Ardmore.

“…just on and off. It's hit and miss but you just take it slow and be careful,” said trucker Michael Meshack while stopped at a Loves gas station on Saturday.

According to AAA- Oklahoma, more than 900,000 Oklahomans are traveling this holiday season. All the weather has created headaches for those heading back from home holiday travels. Those like the Meinecke family on their way from Texas to Nebraska.

It's been really foggy we couldn’t even see the buildings in Oklahoma City at all,” Allison Meineke said.  “It's been a little bit rainy, dark, [sic] gloomy.”

But it's not just a day for traveling, stores and malls are also crowded. Shoppers are expected to flock to retailers to return gifts or to find one last deal in 2015 at an after Christmas sale.

There are some tips that can keep you safe today, according to experts. Things like don't drive through deep water, if you hit ice and snow be sure to slow down. They say if you can't see in front of your car because the weather is so bad there's no shame in waiting it out on the side of the road.
