Before sunrise Sunday, police lights illuminated the parking lot of Oak Grove Apartments on the city's southwest side.
About 4:30 a.m., someone who lived there had seen three victims of gunfire inside a vehicle at SW 15 Street and Grand Boulevard, police said.
"They called 911 because it was obvious that the occupants had been shot," Oklahoma City police Lt. Alan Burgett said.
Investigators said one man did not make it and the other two were taken to the hospital.
But a few hours later, a few minutes from the shooting scene, police got a call from a taxi driver who said he'd been assaulted by a man and woman in his cab near Interstate 40 and Portland Avenue.
By the time police arrived, the two had already bailed.
But they would eventually be caught and cuffed in connection with the triple shooting.
The woman was a witness, and the man, Bobby Dean Whorton, 29, was booked on complaints of murder and robbery with a firearm.

Sunday afternoon, the neighborhood was not quite back to normal.
Kids were out playing but their parents were trying to figure out how this happened.
"We don't know why they came out here and shot them people [sic] that was in that car. We don't know why they was [sic] targeted," a neighbor who did not want her identity revealed said.
This woman said she'll continue to be cautious after the shooting near her home.
"People just need to be careful about what they're doing and how they're doing things around here," she added
