A John Marshall Mid-High student was killed and two others were injured Friday in a car crash at N.W. 122nd Street and Portland Avenue. The aftermath played out in front of dozens of their classmates.

It's one of the hardest things to see unfold. Where words fail, reactions tell more than anyone can imagine or understand.

“We've got a lot of family and a lot of parents here and administrators, and we're trying to deal with the emotions of the event with them finding out someone is deceased,” Oklahoma City Police Major Dexter Nelson said.

If you think it's hard for police to deal with those emotions, imagine the loved ones who are so overcome with them. Some collapsed. Some become angry, but all were in shock, and everyone hurt for them.

Three students of John Marshall Mid-High School were inside a small and now, mangled SUV. Police said the boys were playing around with a girl, took her keys and then sped off in her vehicle – horseplay that ended horrifically.

“It appears to be at a high rate of speed,” Nelson said. “Failed to negotiate a turn and struck an electrical pole behind us.”

Two of the boys were rushed to the hospital. One of them didn't make it.

“The scene was quite chaotic when we got here having happened this close to John Marshall High School,” Nelson said. “School was letting out at the time, and several of the students responded to the crash scene in their cars and on foot. So officers were having to contend with students in their minds trying to render aid by removing the victims from the car which is not what you would want someone to do in a situation like this.”

All evening activities Friday evening were canceled as well as those on Saturday.

Counselors will be on hand next week to help students cope with the loss.
