The suspect arrested for the murder of a missionary in Bethany is talking to police about what motivated him to commit the crime.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Selvin Gonzalez confessed to stabbing the victim, 73-year-old Jose Ruiz, and slitting his throat before setting the house on fire. Gonzalez was also injured while setting the fire. He was taken to Baptist hospital to be treated for severe burns to his face, thigh and hands.

Gonzalez and another man, Miguel Martinez, were arrested on Saturday. Gonzalez is facing charges of First-Degree Murder and Arson. Martinez was charged with Accessory After the Fact.

In his confession to police, Gonzalez claimed that he had loaned Ruiz $2,000 and that he was going over to his house to collect the money the day the murder took place. Gonzalez went on to tell police that he believed Ruiz was trying to extort $12,000 from his wife.

At last check, Gonzalez was still being treated at Baptist Hospital. He is listed in Fair Condition.
