America's doctor weighed in on how the University of Oklahoma can go from hurt to healing following the racist SAE chant caught on video.
Dr. Phil is from Oklahoma, has been on the OU campus several times and has seen the video. In an interview with News 9, he said it does not represent the OU community.
“What I saw on that video is disgusting. It is despicable. The behavior is just beyond stupidity,” Dr. Phil said.
No one is laughing now, but Dr. Phil said he finds it hard to see why anyone on the SAE bus ever thought the racist chant was funny.
“Those young men do not speak for Oklahoma University. They do not speak for the entire student body and faculty there. They don't speak for the state of Oklahoma,” he explained.
The young men have said the song, which uses a racial slur and talks about lynching, was taught to them. Dr. Phil claims the chant is not exclusive to OU, as his researchers are finding out.
“We are continuing to find traces of this…so I'm very concerned just how far this goes and how deep the roots go in that particular fraternity,” Dr. Phil told News 9.
The talk show host said the open dialogue about race relations on campus must continue.
“You can't change what you don't acknowledge,” he added.
He said the students and groups from OU, who he has invited onto his show, believe there is still racial tension on campus. However, those same people say it is encouraging someone recorded the song and shared it with the public so it could be exposed.
“They see that as a very positive thing that happened on this University. That's saying, ‘Let's put this out there. Let's have a dialogue about this. Let's talk about this so something can be done about it,'” Dr. Phil said. “I know Oklahoma. I know Oklahoma University and this will be a spark for change.”
Dr. Phil said he agrees with how the university has responded and said he is proud of President David Boren taking a definitive stand against the video and the parties involved.
