OKLAHOMA CITY -

A man is accused of shooting and killing his mother's boyfriend overnight inside the apartment they all lived in.

Darnell Ladamian Knox, 27, is currently being held in the Oklahoma County Jail without bond. Police took him into custody without incident after he was found waiting in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at the Auburn Glen apartments near NW 10th St. and MacArthur Blvd. just before 1 a.m.

Several people were seen milling around the unit where the shooting took place. Police said they received a call from a woman who was hysterical and crying. Inside police found the body of 44-year-old James Hunter. He had been shot several times.

Jelaina Keung lives nearby. She just moved in two months ago and says she never heard any fights coming from inside the apartment where the shooting happened. But she was even more surprised to hear that the victim was a convicted rapist out of Arkansas.

News 9 checked and James Hunter was even on the Oklahoma Sex Offender Registry.

“Wow,” said Keung. “Guess you got to check your surroundings.”

Police confirm Hunter was dating the mother of 27-year-old Darnell Knox, and that all of them lived together in the apartment along with several other people, but this was the first domestic-related call to that unit.

“There was not an altercation immediately preceding the shooting,” said MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “However, there were some ill feelings between the suspect and the victim.”

As it turns out, Knox is no stranger to the Oklahoma County Jail. He has been booked in here a total of seven times before for things like domestic abuse, but now he will be facing a first-degree murder charge for this deadly shooting.

Knox has yet to be formally arraigned or charged.
