A former supervisor for the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division has been charged with embezzling more than $5,000.

According to an affidavit, on Wednesday, 41-year-old Robert Jackson Jr., was charged with one count of embezzlement of state property. Jackson supervised the front counter clerks and was responsible for counting daily deposits for the Animal Welfare office.

On January 20, Jackson reportedly met with his supervisor at S.W. 89th and Santa Fe, and told him that he left the money bag on a counter unattended while he made copies. When he returned, the money bag with cash deposits was missing.

According to police, Jackson then told his supervisor that he began putting his own money in the deposits because he was afraid he would be fired. He said he was resigning, but he refused to go back to the office with the supervisor.

On March 17, Jackson admitted to police that he took about $1,500 from the Animal Welfare deposits around December 15, 2013. He said he tried to pay the money back but was unable to catch up.

An audit shows $5,143.30 missing from the Animal Welfare office during the time period.
