Police have released the name of a suspect who was shot and killed Wednesday on Interstate 35, tying up holiday traffic for several hours as thousands tried to get to their Thanksgiving destinations.

Police say officers were checking the area of S.E. 44th Street and Shields for stolen vehicles on November 27. They located a stolen car and began following it.

Officers followed the vehicle to the Shell gas station on S.E. 44th at I-35, and waited for backup. While they waited, a woman got out of the car and ran into the station. She was immediately taken into custody.

A man who was in the car also got out and ran. The man, identified as 30-year-old Simon Ramirez, ran southbound along the east I-35 Service Road before jumping the concrete barriers and running westbound across the busy highway.

Police say Ramirez had a gun, and pointed it at drivers as he ran across I-35. Approximately seven officers chased Ramirez on foot, ordering him numerous times to stop and drop his weapon.

Police say after Ramirez repeatedly refused to follow the commands, two officers opened fire. Ramirez was shot and killed while running in the southbound, outside lane of I-35 near the S.E. 51st Street exit.

Police closed southbound I-35 after the shooting. It remained closed for more than five hours while officers investigated. The two officers who shot Ramirez have been placed on administrative leave while the department investigates the shooting.

Police say the woman arrested at the gas station will be charged.
