OU Women's Basketball Opens With Win Against Creighton

Posted: Updated:

No. 12 Oklahoma showcased a post-oriented attack and proved its perimeter shooting was still highly-effective in a 69-48 win over Creighton Saturday.

Aaryn Ellenberg scored 19 points and Whitney Hand added 14 in the Sooners' season-opening victory.

The Sooners used a 16-2 first-half run to put the Bluejays away.

Creighton led 8-2 in the early minutes, but a layup and 1 by Hand sparked a 9-0 run from which the Sooners never gave up the lead.

The Sooners were 1-of-6 from 3-point range in the first half, but the low percentage did not faze the post-oriented attack. Junior center Nicole Griffin added eight points, all in the first half, while showcasing improved mobility and an often successful jump hook.

OU scored 12 of its first 14 second-half point from 3-pointers as it looked for Ellenberg, who was 3-for-3 in the period, and Hand beyond the arc.

Ellenberg was 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the second half.

The Sooners next host UCLA Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. Oklahoma has won 14 straight home openers.
