Cowgirls Stay Unbeaten With Win Against UAB

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma State dominated its first road game of the season with a 4-2 victory against Alabama-Birmingham on Friday night.

Four different Cowgirls scored as they improved to 5-0-0 on the young season.

"You know there's never going to be an easy game any time you travel," OSU coach Colin Carmichael said. "We started really badly the first 10 minutes; (UAB) came out with a ton of energy and took it to us. But our kids responded and fought back and played some really good soccer… just pleased to go on the road and win."

Both teams scored in the 12th minute, with UAB taking an early lead when Emma Jane Smith beat her defender and sent a shot past goalie AD Franch.

But the lead didn't last long when just 18 seconds later, George Christie delivered a shot that glanced off a UAB defender and into the back of the net. Christie's second goal of the season tied the game at 1-1.

The Cowgirls would take the lead at 26:39 when Kristen Kelley scored her first goal of the season, blasting a shot from 18 yards out.

The Cowgirls put the game away with two more goals in a seven-minute span in the second half.

The first of those scores came off a corner kick as Caitlyn Biggers recorded her first collegiate goal off an assist from Megan Marchesano to make the score 3-1.

In the 68th minute, Marchesano scored, as well. After being fouled in the box, the senior stepped up and converted a penalty kick to put OSU up by three goals. The goal was Marchesano's team-leading third of the season and 20th of her career, which moved her into a tie for 10th place on the Cowgirls' all-time list.

OSU returns to the pitch Sunday when it travels to Memphis to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.
