CHICAGO – Former Oklahoma State baseball player Robin Ventura was named the manager of the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

Ventura was a special adviser to director of player development Buddy Bell, and also helped coach at his kids' high school in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

He agreed to a multi-year deal to replace Ozzie Guillen, who left Chicago to manage the Florida Marlins.

Ventura played for Chicago in the first 10 seasons of his professional career from 1989-98.

He said in a statement that when he came back to work for the White Sox, he knew it was his home and part of him never left the organization.

"My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Chicago," Ventura said. "Managing a Major League Baseball team is a tremendous honor. It's also an opportunity and a challenge.

"I am excited to begin my career as a manager surrounded by former teammates, staff, media and White Sox fans I know very well. I already am looking forward to talking to our players, to this offseason and to getting things underway at spring training next February."
