OKLAHOMA CITY -- In honor of her daughter's birthday, an Oklahoma mother has decided to give back to the community. Angela Copley has decided to host a toy drive to benefit the family ministries department at City Rescue Mission.
Her daughter Morgan was diagnosed with Ependymoma, a type of brain cancer when she was 2-years-old. The cancer caused her to lose her vision, but that didn't stop her from reading. She learned to read and write Braille. Morgan loved to read her children's Bible every day. After numerous surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, Morgan lost her battle with cancer two years ago. Angela wanted to find a unique way to celebrate Morgan's birthday this year, while also helping others.
"Birthdays have always been a time of celebration in my family," Angela said. "I contemplated what kind of gift I could give Morgan this year since she is so far away. Then I thought of the command my Savior gave His children to take care of the poor. I thought of the children who are homeless. My prayer is that in some way the toys and Bibles that we are able to give to these children will reassure them that they are important and loved."
In-kind donations of food, clothing, personal hygiene items and toys are always needed to help maintain daily operations at the Mission.
City Rescue Mission serves nearly 400,000 meals a year-that's nearly 1,100 meals a day. The mission always needs meat, eggs, sugar, fresh fruits and vegetables, butter/margarine, spices, baby food, children's snacks, and other staples.
Personal hygiene items are also a necessity to the men, women and children living at the Mission. Donations needed include towels, washcloths, disposable razors, antiperspirant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bath soap, shampoo, diapers and feminine products. Also accepted are socks underwear, jeans, coats, work shoes, tennis shoes and dress shirts in all sizes.
In-kind donations can be dropped off between 8AM-6PM Monday–Friday at City Rescue Mission, 800 W. California Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73106.
