My 2 Cents: Continuous Learning Calendar And Year Round School

I've got to tell you, when I first heard Oklahoma City schools were considering a shift to "year round" school it raised a red flag with me.

My first thought was the child care challenges working parents would face, and coming in a close second was concern that high schoolers who work summer jobs to pay for cars and such wouldn't be able to.

Not to mention, summer camps, vacations, and athletics.

But after seeing the schedule, I've got to say as a parent or a student I would like these frequent two week breaks and the two month summer break would be plenty.

Unfortunately, that raises another red flag for me.

It's not really year round school is it?

If the point is to keep the kids from forgetting over the summer break part of what they've learned, is two months really that much better than a three month summer break.

Kind of makes me wonder if it's not a first step toward an even shorter summer vacation?

Some districts across the country are going 8 to 10 weeks in class then three to five weeks off year round.

I'm glad that, for now, the Oklahoma City School Board has protected the summer break, June and July off, but it bears watching.
