Republican James Lankford Wins U.S. House 5th District Seat

OKLAHOMA CITY – Republican James Lankford has been elected to hold the U.S. House 5th District Seat.

Lankford, a 42-year-old political newcomer, defeated Democratic candidate Billy Coyle and Independent candidate Clark Duffe.

Lankford said as the U.S. House 5th District Seat holder he wants to challenge the "status quo in Washington" and career politicians.

"They are not the only ones who are passionate about our country," Lankford said. "There are a lot of us who are passionate about the issues and ideas, and want to work."

The seat was vacated by Republican Rep. Mary Fallin, who stepped down to run for governor.

Lankford effectively used social networking media to reach out to evangelicals and others. Lankford launched his campaign's Facebook page on Sept. 1, 2009, and now has more than 19,000 followers.

Republicans have held the central Oklahoma seat for 36 years.

Lankford served as the director for Falls Creek youth camp from 1996-2009.
