UK Snow Causes More Chaos

Posted: Updated:

The second heavy snowfall to hit Britain this week caused major delays for
planes, trains and automobiles on Thursday.

Runways at Birmingham and East Midlands airports in central England and Luton
airport north of London were closed, while train operators reported delays on
Thursday on routes between London and the west.

As much as four inches (10 centimetres) of snow fell overnight in south Wales
and western and central England.

This winter has been the coldest and snowiest in Britain for years, and some
authorities say they are running short on grit and salt.

Grit cannot be stored above ground as it loses it salinity, one council
spokesman said.

London - which was bought to a standstill during the first heavy snow fall
earlier this week, escaped the second dumping on snow on Thursday- only rain
fell in the capital.

On Monday the city had its heaviest snowfall in almost 20 years.

Schools were closed, public transport all but suspended and (m) millions of
workers stayed home.
