Staff and Wire Reports

JONES, Oklahoma -- A grass fire caused evacuations this morning at Jones Elementary School.

About 600 students were evacuated by bus to the Jones High School gymnasium because smoke filled some of the classrooms.

The fire did not reach or damage school property, but Superintendent Mike Steele said flames came within about 20 feet of playground equipment.

The fire did destroy several mobile homes in the area, and burned about five acres.

By noon, firefighters had the fire out. No injuries were reported.
