Officials meet, plan for protection in crisis times

Posted: Updated:

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry hosted a two-day, Multi-State Partnership for Security in Agriculture meeting Wednesday. State and national Homeland Security advisors along with officials from 13 states attended the meeting held in Oklahoma City.

State Veterinarian, Dr. Becky Brewer, said the meeting covered issues regarding a response plan to protect agriculture and natural resources in the event of disaster or terrorist attack.

"The mission of this partnership is to encourage collaboration and cooperation among states, federal agencies and other stakeholders so we can share information, prevent duplication of efforts and effectively respond in times of emergency," Brewer said.

The program was formed in 2003 and crafts plans for times of crisis, according to Brewer.

The meeting also reviewed a program designed to help effectively deliver vaccines, antiviral drugs or therapeutic products in case of an animal disease affecting human health and the economy, Brewer said.

The American Veterinary Medical Association also outlined a plan about dealing with companion and non-livestock animals during a time of crisis.

"We are honored that Oklahoma is hosting this meeting and we really appreciate the help and working partnership we have with the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management," Brewer said.

The meeting will also be held Thursday at the Oklahoma National Guard Regional Training institute.
