SKIATOOK, Okla. (AP) -- A Verdigris senior has broken Oklahoma's career scoring record for boys high school basketball.
Rotnei Clarke hit a free throw with 3:14 remaining to pick up his 37th point of the night and 3,643rd of his high school career on Friday. His team beat Adair 70-61 and advanced to the Class 3A state tournament next week.
Clarke broke the record held by Ty Harman, who finished with 3,639 points for Maud in a career that ended in 1989.
The near-capacity crowd at Skiatook's gym many of whom had counted down Clarke's run to the record starting in the second quarter roared as Clarke hit a jumper to tie the record.
Moments later the crowd cheered when Clarke got the ball for the first time with a chance to take the mark. He was fouled just past midcourt and sent to the free-throw line.
Clarke sank the free throw, breaking the record.
"I'm glad to have it out of the way so we can focus on our main goal winning a state championship," he said later.
The 6-1 Clarke has signed to play college basketball with Arkansas.
