Winter storm in weekend forecast

Posted: Updated:

By the National Weather Service

A light mixture of light freezing rain and sleet may develop late Thursday night over south central and southeast Oklahoma, where light accumulations of ice are possible.

A winter storm is expected to affect the region Friday night through Sunday, with significant amounts of ice, snow and rain possible.

A winter storm is expected to bring potentially significant amounts of ice to the western third of Oklahoma and parts of North Texas this weekend. Snow could reach significant amounts north of Interstate 44 and flooding rains are also possible in southeast Oklahoma.

A light mixture of freezing rain and sleet is expected to spread over the southwest corner of Oklahoma and parts of North Texas Friday night before expanding and becoming heavier across the western third of Oklahoma on Saturday.

Mainly rain and thunderstorms will expand over the remainder of Oklahoma on Saturday, with heavy local rainfall possible.

The ice may mix with or change to rain across parts of the area on Saturday. North of Interstate 44, the rain and ice could become snow Saturday night and into Sunday.

Because temperatures over portions of the area are expected to hover close to freezing this weekend, precise ice and snow totals are very difficult to predict at this time. However, it appears that the western third of Oklahoma and parts of North Texas have a chance to receive between one half and one inch of a freezing rain and sleet through Saturday.

Several inches of a heavy wet snow are also possible north of interstate 44 Saturday night and Sunday.

Flooding rains may occur over southeast Oklahoma, where rain totals through May average two to four inches.
