FORT COBB, Okla. -- A woman was in critical condition Saturday night after being shot by her estranged husband, who then fatally shot himself.
Leonard D. Petty, 39, shot 39-year-old Tina M. Petty in the head about 9 a.m. this morning at a home north of Fort Cobb in Caddo County, said Jessica Brown, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman.
Tina Petty was flown to OU Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition Saturday night. Leonard Petty died at the scene, Brown said.
The couple was going through a divorce, and Leonard Petty no longer lived at the home where the shooting occurred. Authorities were summoned to the scene by a friend of the couple's son, Caddo County Sherriff Gene Cain said.
"Yes there were several boys here," Cain said. "They spent the night with the victim's son and we have some witnesses."
The caller told dispatchers the two were fighting when Leonard Petty went to his vehicle and grabbed a 9 mm handgun.
Caddo County residents said they were shocked by the shootings.
"You expect this in the city and stuff like that, but not around here," said Joanne Meeks, a friend of Tina Petty. "It's a real shock to everybody."
