Clinton, Romney win in Michigan

DETROIT -- Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Democratic winner in Michigan, but it's a victory of little consequence.

Clinton was the party's only major candidate entered in a state where party officials defied the Democratic National Committee by holding the primary so early in the campaign season.

Clinton's main competition was from the "uncommitted" line on the ballot, an option that some supporters of John Edwards and Barack Obama advocated to embarrass the former first lady.

Mitt Romney has scored his first major primary victory in his native Michigan.

Romney's win over John McCain is one Romney desperately needed to give his weakened candidacy new life and to set the stage for a three-man Republican showdown in South Carolina.

Romney finished second in Iowa to Mike Huckabee and second to McCain in New Hampshire.
