Broken Arrow Public Schools is taking a different approach to after-school activities.

They're pushing their students to learn skills that could inspire what they want to be when they grow up.

A group of 20 4th and 5th graders make up Rhodes Elementary's first-ever Architecture Club.

The club meets once a week and they get to learn from a local architecture firm, WRA.

Only a handful of students were accepted to participate in the Architecture Club, and one of them is Cora McCance.

"I was like yay, oh my gosh, because all my other friends got accepted and I was like we could all be together and we could do Architect Club," said Cora.

Cora and her other club members got hands-on experience with what the job entails.

"I've learned like structure and like designing stuff, and we did like 3-D things, and that was fun and building things," Cora said.

During one club meeting, students worked in groups to build a tower out of uncooked pasta noodles and marshmallows.

Ayden Stwart is learning there's a lot to the job.

"I would say doing the math and all that I don't even know division," Ayden said.

The club tests their math skills and creativity.

Thursday's task was to design any room in a house. Cora picked a living room.

"For like the couch, I had like white, soft, not too like fluffy or soft, but it was like still a nice texture," said Cora.

The host of the class, Elizabeth Conrad, says she's seen the students in this club grow over the last two months.

"One way they've grown socially is they interact more with each other, and they've gotten to know each other," she said. "They just talk, they work together."

Rhodes Elementary is looking to add a new club when students get back from winter break. The school is looking into starting a landscaping club and a bicycle club.
