News 9 Storm Tracker Kyle Wilson was raised in Mooreland and now calls Woodward home. While Kyle is one of the “new guys” on the News 9 Storm Team, he is no stranger to the thrill of the chase.
Kyle grew up with a fascination with all things weather and storm related, from the storms themselves to the men and women behind the scenes reporting on and chasing those historic storms. In grade school, most kids looked forward to summer camps at the lake. Kyle however, waited each spring for the National Weather Service’s Storm Spotting School to roll around.
Kyle’s true purpose lies in helping those around him. While his occupation as a Lieutenant at the Woodward Fire Department with Advanced EMT certification certainly allows him to assist others, it also brought him his passion for storm chasing.
On April 15, 2012, Kyle spent the night finding, treating and transporting townspeople to the local hospital after a massive tornado barreled through Woodward leaving a wake of destruction and taking numerous lives. After that, Kyle knew he wanted not just to help with the aftermath of these storms, but to give as much warning as he could to those around him to keep the people of Northwest Oklahoma safe.
Kyle is now heavily involved in his community, devoting a large portion of his time to organizing and putting on Crystal Christmas, an annual holiday light show event, started by members of his family and now ran by his family and other community members. He also remains active in numerous professional firefighter’s organizations.
Kyle and his wife Afton live in Woodward and have three children, Holly, Bryson and Brianna. When he’s not out chasing storms, Kyle enjoys watching his kids play sports, cooking and spending time outdoors, and watching OSU athletics (GO POKES!).
