OKLAHOMA CITY -

Organizers of a proposed charter school say they are not getting a fair break for the Oklahoma City school district.

The Sovereign Community School would open at the site of a former school at Northwest 48th and Independence next August.

The school would celebrate the culture of Indigenous People.

But, the Oklahoma City school board has rejected the proposal twice, citing budget concerns.

Organizers said they are now appealing to the state school board.

“We have tried really hard to work with this district and the staff and every time we meet their bar, the bar gets raised on moved,” said Phil Gover, Director of Sovereign Schools Project.

“It’s been enormously frustrating,” added Gover.

Gover said he hopes the school can help turn around an alarming stat.

He said a little over half of all Native American students in Oklahoma City graduate from high school.
