Miracle Saves Christmas For Oklahoma Foster Kids

OKLAHOMA CITY -

If you don’t believe in Christmas miracles, this might change your mind.

An organization that provides Christmas presents for thousands of Oklahoma children in foster care, ran out of money just one day before they had to finish up their shopping. Then, generous Oklahomans stepped in.

An old grocery store on the city’s northwest side is Oklahoma City’s version of the North Pole. A warehouse full of toys for some 7,000 children in foster care, all paid for through donations and distributed by volunteers with OK Foster Wishes.

"It's such a big need for the kids to be moved from a home and not to receive Christmas,” said OK Foster Wishes volunteer Regina Haywood. “It's such a big need and I really love doing this. To make them smile and have a good Christmas. Every child deserves a good Christmas."

But that almost didn’t happen. OK Foster Wishes was short about$10,000, and with just one shopping day left, it would’ve taken a miracle for all to get enough presents for all those kids.

"So, I was freaking out this morning then checked our PayPal account and there was $10,000 that wasn't there yesterday. And that just never happens,” said Stephanie McElhaney, a OK Foster Wishes Coordinator. “What impacted me the most in seeing that, and I’m bawling sitting at my computer looking at it just because it was 10-dollars here or $20 there."

OK Foster Wishes spends about $75 per child. Now, the organization has enough to fulfill the wishes of these special kids and put a smile on their faces during a very difficult time.

"We can't fix all that with Christmas presents, you know?  But we can at least bring a sense of normalcy for them,” said McElhaney.

"It's like emotional,” Volunteer Jessica Densel added, "You can't say thank you enough for that generosity."
