Victims Harassed By Machete-Wielding Man In Stillwater Speak Out

A Stillwater man is behind bars after police say he confronted two newspaper carriers with a machete.

Dash cam video shows police stopping the suspect to question him, and he pulls out a three-foot machete. The suspect, 28-year old Jose Gomez-Rodriguez Jr., got to the ground and surrendered without a problem.

But it was a problem for Charlie Langley. He and his son were just delivering papers when they came across Gomez-Rodriguez Jr.  

"We pull up on the store we had to deliver papers to and the guy come back hollering, acting crazy and the next thing we know he pulls a machete out of his pants and hollering at us,” said Langley.

Charlie’s son, William added, "He just pulled it out of his pants and I kind of, really? And the first thing that came to my mind is ‘Hey, we're just delivering newspapers.’ That's what I leaned forward and yelled at him. And he just got a smile on his face and waved. It's ok. You guys are fine. You can go on. Dad said, ‘No you can go on.’"

The Langley’s called police. That’s when they picked Gomez-Rodriguez Jr. up.

"It's kind of, what's this guy thinking?” William Langley said, “There's really got to be something wrong with him or he's really gotta [sic] be out there on something."

Police say he was on something; a combination of booze and meth. 

"He was in our jail for at least 26 hours as we waited for him to sober up to transfer him to the county jail,” said Capt. Kyle Gibbs of the Stillwater Police Department.

Gomez-Rodriguez Jr. is charged with illegally carrying a weapon and public intoxication. 

"Yeah, he needs to go to jail and get some help.” Charlie Langley said, “I believe they said he was on meth. So yeah, he needs to be off the streets for a while."
