A week after a fire destroyed the Little Axe Field House, the football team is ready to play their first home game.

On Monday, August 22nd, the players lost all the gear in their locker room and were afraid they wouldn’t be able to play this season, but the community is making it possible.

“They gave us those jerseys to wear when we didn’t have anything,” said Mikeem Fool, a senior wide receiver and corner. He said the National Guard jumped in to help as soon as the fire happened.

Head Coach Matt Looney said, “They showed up with 20 duffel bags full of jerseys.” They were one of several organizations and schools that helped out.

Smoke and flames destroyed everything in the boys locker room inside the Field House. Much of their football gear was bought with their own money. In minutes, it was all gone.

With all the donations over the past week, Fool is grateful. “Thank you, because this wouldn’t have been possible without you guys.” The team was able to play their scrimmage last Thursday.

Most importantly, they are able to play their first game this Thursday  night.

Looney said, “I think the fact that we’re here today and that we’re playing, that’s a win in itself.”

The boys will be wearing helmets from Bishop McGuiness, jerseys from the National Guard, and using shoulder pads and footballs all the way from Texas.

The Little Axe Football Team is playing to make everyone proud and prove that no fire can destroy their love for the game.

“Coach Looney always tells us that adversity can bring a team together or tear a team apart,” said Fool, “I definitely feel like we are a stronger team.”

The home opener kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Lexington, a school who also pitched in with donations.
