AAA Study Shows Gas Can Damage Car Engines

Posted: Updated:

The gas you put in your car could be doing serious damage to your engine.

You may want to rethink pulling into the gas station with the lowest price on the sign.

A new study by AAA finds most drivers are clogging their engines with gasoline that does not have enough added detergents.

In 1996, federal rules said all gas must have some engine-cleaning additives.  However, not all gas is created equal because some major brands have extra detergents.

In AAA's study they found gas with fewer additives will leave up to 19 times more engine deposits than higher quality fuel.  On average, analysts say these top-tier brands cost about three cents more than the dirtier gas brands and that may be why people aren't using them.

Studies have shown 75 percent of drivers say they buy their gas based on price or location.
