Local Chefs Create Meals For OKC Homeless

Oklahoma City gourmet chefs cooked 300 meals for the Oklahoma City Day Shelter on Tuesday using only ingredients that were donated to the pantry.

This was a fun challenges similar to television cooking shows, but it’s for a good local cause.

“This is actually fun. This is what I call bachelor cooking. You take what is in the pantry and you make something you can eat,” executive chef Ryan Lawson of A Good Egg Dining Group said.

Lawson said it’s pretty tough to use only the ingredients donated, but it came out as a delicious meal that could be served at a restaurant.

The chefs together created braised lamb mushroom sauce over buttered spaghetti.

The main entrée was served with a side of bacon green beans.

For dessert, they made a brownie Oreo bread pudding. 

“I normally don’t eat dessert, but this one was really good," said Jason Sesher, one of the homeless guests.

He said he doesn’t get nice meals often and is grateful for this treat.

“They kind of see past us being poor,” said Sesher.

Belinda has been living on the streets for five years. She’s most thankful for being treated like an “ordinary person.”

“Thank god they came and fed us today. It’s a blessing that they came,” Belinda said.

It wasn’t just a warm plate served, but also a full-service dining room. Front-end restaurant mangers served the dessert and even cleaned up plates. This is all part of giving back to those who could use a helping hand. 

This challenge was created in February 2015 and happens once a month with different top chefs in Oklahoma City.

The Homeless Alliance plans to continue this event for as long as they can.
