FAA: Flight Attendants Watch For Passengers Who Can Help During Emergencies

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

If you've flown, you know all about the flight attendant procedures.

We're talking about the parts where they show you the exits and how to use your seat belt. We found out they start that procedure long before you take your seat.

If you think flight attendants are always watching you, they are.

Here in Oklahoma City, the FAA tests anything and everything safety when it comes to the way we fly, and it has a direct impact on flight attendants. They are shown the safest and most effective ways to help passengers in a crash.

To help, you are advised to wear shoes with laces, long sleeves and bring a hat. But it's not all about what you wear. You may be called on to help in an emergency.

From the moment you get to your gate, to when you walk onto the airplane and when you take your seat the flight crew is watching your every move.

"They are already figuring out who the able-bodied person are that they have to call on to assist in an emergency,” said Cynthia McLean, FAA Cabin Safety Research. “People who are confident. People who look like they could make a decision in a crunch."

The main piece of advice from the FAA, just be ready. They say you may think you know those flight attendant speeches. But you likely don't because every plane is different.
