Wildcat Whacked: Sooners Upset In Manhattan

Posted: Updated:
MANHATTAN, Kansas -

Oklahoma hit the road for Manhattan to play Kansas State on Saturday afternoon, but the No. 1 Sooners were out-toughed in the Little Apple  will be heading back to Norman with another loss on their resume as the Wildcats pulled off the 80-69 upset.

Buddy Hield scored 23 points in the loss, but never looked himself throughout the game and it came back to cost the Sooners.

Early on it looked as if OU (19-3) would run away with the win after the Sooners began the game on a 9-to-0 run, but that actually wasn’t the case at all. It took a few minutes, but the Wildcats were able to get their feet under them and began to claw back into the game.

Kansas State (14-9) looked like an unstoppable force at some points during the second half, and KSU was able to end the half on an 11-to-2 run that gave the Wildcats at 38-32 lead at halftime.

While the end of the first half had its problems for the Sooners, they seemed to forget about all of that when they came out of intermission.

Isaiah Cousins started off the OU run with a fast-break slam, and then Hield hit one of his signature three-pointers on the next possession to grab the attention of everyone inside of Bramlage Coliseum. After two Ryan Spangler layups on back-to-back possessions the Sooners had tied the game up at 41-41, then capped off an 11-to-3 run with another Cousins layup that forced the Wildcats into calling a timeout.

Despite its second consecutive slow start to a half, Kansas State was able to regroup yet again, and Bruce Webber’s team reeled off a 10-to-2 run to regain a four-point lead. Within the next three minutes KSU was able to extend its lead to eight points, and OU was unable to get closer than four points of the Kansas State lead as they lost their third game of the season away from home.

Cousins finished with 16 points and four rebounds, while Spangler added 14 points and 10 boards. Jordan Woodard was a non factor throughout the game and failed to score. OU only had 10 points total from its bench unit.

Wesley Iwundu scored 22 points to lead the Wildcats while Dean Wade notched 17 points off the bench.

OU will be back in action on Monday night when they host Texas at 8.
