Taking Down TCU: Sooners Destroy The Horned Frogs

When the highest ranked team in the Big 12 meets the lowest ranked team in the Big 12, it wouldn’t be farfetched to expect a one sided matchup. And that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night inside of the Lloyd Noble Center as No. 1 Oklahoma (19-2) outplayed TCU from start to finish and walked away with a 95-72 win.

2/2/16: Sooner Social Scene

Player of the year front runner Buddy Hield was back at destroying opposing defenders, and the senior totaled 17 points on 7-of-13 shot attempts to go with three rebounds.

Things couldn’t have started much better as Oklahoma began the game with an 8-0 lead after point guard Jordan Woodard made five quick free throws and Hield drained his first three-point attempt. TCU (10-12) was able to recover a bit and climb back in the game, but by the 12 minute mark of the first half the Sooners were pulling away.

Freshman Christian James was a spark off the bench and nailed two three-pointers in a two-minute span to help propel the Sooners to a 19-point lead at halftime.

OU continued its efficient play in the second half, but it was sophomore Khadeem Lattin leading the way to open the gates. Lattin was able to convert an impressive tip-in from a Woodard miss, and then the forward came back down the floor and added another layup. After a defensive stop on the next possession, Lattin came down the floor and flushed home a dunk off an assist from Isaiah Cousins to complete a personal 6-0 run and force TCU into taking a timeout.

Oklahoma had a significant lead for the entire second half, and head coach Lon Kruger had the luxury of resting his starters a bit more than normal, which is something he’s not able to do often throughout the course of playing a grueling conference schedule.

It was also nice for OU to pick up such a convincing fan with the Thunder’s Kevin Durant in the house to watch Hield and company play.

Woodard finished with 14 points and made all nine of his free-throw attempts. Cousins nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Ryan Spangler recorded his usual double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Lattin had 10 points and three blocks. James scored 12 points off the bench and Akolda Manyang had maybe his best game of the season with eight points and four blocks.

Vladimir Brodziansky led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 17 points while Chris Washburn added 15 of his own.

OU will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Manhattan to play Kansas State.
